What is my training and experience in homeopathy and in nutrition?

In homeopathy.......
Twelve years ago I was inspired to study homeopathy by my own personal healing experience with it. I began by learning from accomplished practitioners and local study groups. Then came workshops with much more experienced homeopaths. I began having very positive experience as a practitioner eight years ago.

In 1998, I sought out what I considered the best training I could have as professional homeopath. I entered Louis Klein’s Master Homeopathic Clinician Program and graduated, with diploma, two years later. Louis Klein is a world reknown homeopath, remarkable for his success with so-called incurable health disturbances. My course work for his program included 550 classroom hours geared towards development of advanced prescribing and clinical skills. I was awarded a diploma for demonstrating competence in advanced homeopathic practice through analytical thesis and presentation of cured cases. Diplomates of this program are called Master Homeopathic Clinicians.

Over the years, as my own training and experience has grown, so has my practice. I have recently moved my practice and family from Taos, New Mexico, to Mt. Shasta City, California. I am fortunate to be able to incorporate the healing energy of the mountain into my practice.

Homeopathy is a healing art and science which has met with much opposition from the American Medical Association in this country. In fact, the AMA was orginally formed to oppose the doctors who chose to use homeopathic treatments. Because homeopathic medicines are not harmful, even when poorly chosen by inexperienced or untrained practitioners, it is not a field which the government has felt obligated to regulate.

The good side to absence of regulation is that homeopathy has not been steered, as the AMA has been, by the powerful pharmaceutical and advertising industries. Another benefit is that homeopathy remains affordable. The down side is that homeopathy is still struggling to be recognized as the incredibly safe and effective healing tool that it is.

Homeopaths themselves, in an effort to uphold high standards of practice—which are necessary for homeopathy to be credible—are only just now forming organizations to certify qualifications of practitioners. It is still up to the consumer to question the practitioner’s training and experience and to discern whether the treatment is indeed safe and effective.

What is my training in nutrition?

After decades of personal study and observation I realized that, as powerful as homeopathy is, diet and effects of poor nutrition are often obstacles to cure. I wanted to offer nutritional therapy and specific support for the patient who needs to make diet changes. I began formal training in nutritional sciences in 2001 and graduated two years later from the American Health Science University Certified Nutrition Program and passed the national certification exam. I am now a licensed Certified Nutritionist. I am prepared to work with other medical professionals in designing and monitoring a nutritional program that addresses serious health issues.

Nutritional Therapy

Initial Consult

If you have been referred by your physician for nutritional therapy, please bring diagnostic test results. Pack your medications and supplements in a bag and bring them. Plan to spend an hour or so with me as I pull together the information I need from you to analyse your nutritional needs. I may recommend additional testing, but most often not. I schedule time after your appointment to analyze your case and develop a therapy plan. Depending on circumstances and the complexity of the case, I will either phone, mail, or meet with you again to go over details and answer questions. I am always available to my clients for phone questions and brief follow-up's.

Some things I do for my clients....

  • I provide an individualized Nutritional Therapy Plan (see below) to address your specific health issues. My clients are recovering from diabetes, migraine, PMS, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, eczema, acne, candida, hypo or hyperthyroid, and various chronic and recurring illnesses. They are learning how best to approach menopause and pregnancy complaints and other life passages. Therapies for these situations are different and very specific to the client's needs. If you would like to see a sample therapy plan, contact me at: ellenbc11@hotmail.com
  • I carefully guide you through the detoxification your body needs. This is a key piece to healing but must be approached cautiously and with professional guidance. We use foods and supplements—not fasting—to assist in cleansing the body.
  • I sort through the nutritional supplements you are currently taking to see if you are overdoing some and neglecting others. With all the mixes on the market it’s easy to duplicate various minerals and nutrients, some of which can be toxic in high doses. I recommend high quality brands from local stores and order from my sources if the products are not available.
  • I tailor your program to include the support you need, whether that might be counseling, connecting you to local support groups, educating your family (I use a notebook), providing healthy recipes, grocery lists, etc. I'm always happy to give people who are new to health foods a tour of the local health food stores.
  • I offer to communicate with your primary care provider or doctor as nutritional therapy may reduce your needs for medications.
  • I help you understand just how nutritional therapy can lower blood pressure or assist normal thyroid activity or stabilize blood sugar levels or optimize liver function, or the support immune system, whatever is necessary.... Understanding is a key to making changes!
  • I offer constitutional homeopathic treatment to stimulate healing of chronic illness and to strengthen immune health. Homeopathic treatment stimulates your inate healing forces and can help you make the mental and emotional shifts towards healthy lifestyle.

Nutritional Therapy Plan

A properly designed Nutritional Therapy Plan:

  • Details your detoxification process (should you need this)—what foods and nutritional supplements you need, how to take them and how often.

  • Tells you how you can correct nutritional deficits caused by lifestyle, by illness, or by chemical (or other radical) medical treatments.

  • Tells you how to improve your body’s assimilation and metabolism of nutrients.

  • Recommends specific changes in diet and lifestyle.

  • May recommend nutritional supplements such as vitamins, enzymes, minerals, herbs, glandulars, and concentrated food mixes. Some people don’t like the idea of taking pills and are willing to make careful diet changes instead of supplements. Good food is the best medicine!

  • Is complementary and supportive of medical treatment. I like to be in communication with your primary care provider, especially if you are on medications. Often, proper nutrition will lessen your need for medications and it is wise to have your doctor informed of changes you are making.

How nutrition and homeopathy work together.
Nutritional consult or homeopathic consult.......Should you do both?

Homeopathy is an energetic medicine as well as a physical medicine. Homeopathic treatment operates at energetic and mental levels, from which life and body are created, and it can offer a truly miraculous healing, regardless of lifestyle or diet. The way you eat and your nutritional state affect you first at a physical level, and then later at other levels. So the two together—homeopathy and nutrition—operate from two different and complementary directions.

Homeopathic treament and nutritional therapy are supportive of each other. Homeopathic treatment can make it easier to break food addictions and lifestyle patterns which have bad effects on your nutritional status. And proper diet—aside from its health benefits—makes it easier for you to recognize and for me to evaluate the effectiveness of your homeopathic remedy.

I've noticed that there are some folks out there who seem to eat anything they want and do just fine. For others, healing involves a progressive cleaning up of their act. In my experience as a homeopath, it appears that poor diet and deficient nutrition are often obstacles to cure of life-threatening and chronic illnesses. So, I always ask some basic questions about my clients' diets. If I notice anything out of whack I'll say something, whether you've asked for a nutritional consult or not.

If you are suffering from a chronic problem which is not life-threatening, consider making an appointment for homeopathic treatment alone. If I suspect that diet habits are contributing to your problem I will say so and suggest some diet changes. If that doesn't help, and you are willing, we can add nutritional therapy later.

If you are considering homeopathy as preventative medicine and you already have a good grip on your diet, schedule homeopathic treatment alone.

If you are dealing with life-threatening illness, schedule a nutritional consult first, and then a constitutional homeopathic consult a few weeks later. There will be a break in fee if you make both appointments at the same time. It is possible for me to schedule a longer appointment and consult you in both areas at one. But if you are taking regular medications, we'll want to clean your system up a bit before giving the homeopathic remedy.

If your doctor or other healthcare practioner has referred you for nutrtional counseling, you can schedule an appointment for a nutritional consult only.
